Maxfield Mouse Makes Friends lessons, ideas, and resources

Book one, Maxfield Mouse Makes Friends, Maxfield introduces himself. He likes to make useful inventions from objects he finds. He is a STEM mouse, experimenting and building with the 5 simple machines.

Chapter 2 - Maxfield adjusts the wheel on a weight scale.

Discuss: How do the humans figure out Sky’s weight?

Student Activity : Students weigh bulky objects by weighing themselves while holding the objects and subtracting their own weights. Review weight measurements. Estimate weights of objects, test, and adjust.

Discuss: Why are the humans concerned about Sky’s weight?

Student activity: Make a health plan for Sky. Research what dogs should weigh by size or breed, what they should eat, and how much they should exercise. Connect to health and wellness lessons for people.

Chapter 5 - Maxfield uses a lever (Catapult) to toss treats to the dog Sky.

Discuss: Why does Maxfield need a lever?

Student activity: With soft materials (pompoms, erasers, etc.) see what lever design can propel the object furthest.
